"It's the same thing as with a nude lip - you kind of have to be über-confident," says Thompson, who notes that some who have tried nudes or neutrals feel it makes them look dead. Nay: The color needs to be right for your skin tone. Miss Wu is a pale gray hue with a matte finish it's one of five bottles in CND's Jason Wu Collection, $47. Try these, both by CND: Perfectly Bare is a fleshy peach it's $20 in a duo with Perfectly Bare Shimmer. Yay!: Picking a color that matches your skin tone can make your fingers appear longer, and sophisticated nudes and neutrals can look elegant when a flash of fire-engine red isn't exactly in order. Minx manicures aren't available at all salons. Nay: Sally Hansen's Salon Effects in Groove, a 3-D texture, were so thick they didn't stay on, although that problem didn't occur with any of the brand's patterned adhesives. And since there are no fumes or mess, you can even apply them on an airplane. Bonus: Zero drying time and no stained cuticles. (See for locations.) Expect adhesives to last for about 10 days. They cost about $10 for a box of 16 adhesives, while Minx treatments cost about $55. Patterns range from '70s-inspired florals to graphic prints, herringbone plaid and cheetah. Sally Hansen Salon Effects nail polish strips make the trend more affordable and easy to apply at home. Yay!: Celebs such as Fergie, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga were among the first to wear Minx adhesives, which come in many designs and are typically applied at a salon. Nay: Glitter may be on the juvenile side for some glitter polishes are notoriously difficult to apply with enough thickness to get the desired effect, and they can be difficult to remove. Ondias is also adding glitz to her clients' French tips in San Antonio: "Instead of white, they're doing hot-pink tips and putting a little sparkly nail polish over it to brighten it up," she says. "If you're wearing a cream color and you want to do something to flash it up, put glitter over it and you've just changed your entire look," says Weiss-Fischmann. Combine a neutral shade with a glitter polish to add glitz to the nude-nail trend. At Wimbledon recently, all eyes were on her hands - and not just for her powerful serve - as she introduced sparkling new layered colors from her GrandSlam! England collection for OPI ($14.95 for a set with two polishes). It's perfect for daytime parties where the sun can make your nails pop poolside or - in Serena Williams' case - from across the tennis court. Yay!: For a slightly less attention-getting mani or pedi, try glitter. Not all salons can perform shellac pedicures. Some shellac users have reported damaged nails after the removal process. You should let your nails breathe after the third application, says John Thompson, marketing director at the Upper Hand in Houston. Shellac has to be refilled like a gel manicure, so it costs a little more than a basic treatment - $35-$50. Nay: The curing machine uses ultraviolet light, so you may want to apply sunscreen to your hands before a shellac manicure. It dries instantly, so you also don't have to worry about fishing your keys out of your purse or slipping back into your shoes. Once applied, each layer is cured under ultraviolet light, activating a polymer that lasts for up to 14 days. Sand blasts normal polish off, but shellac isn't going anywhere. It goes on like a polish but wears like a gel, making it perfect for a beach vacation. It was such a hit when CND introduced it last year, the company couldn't keep up with the demand, says Kristy Ondias, owner of Personal Touch Salon and Spa in San Antonio. Yay!: Shellac polish, aside from giving a mirror-smooth finish, yields a manicure that is practically indestructible compared to the traditional basecoat-color-topcoat. But if you want to try some fun or funky new trends, check these out: To be polished for summer, you can keep it simple with tried-and-true pink or red. She says the two biggest trends are neutral nails or very bright colors. "Nail polish has become an affordable luxury." "It's not just nail polish any longer - it's an accessory," says Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, executive vice president and artistic director of the OPI nail polish empire.
